Aunque la necesidad de un nuevo cementerio en la ciudad era evidente desde finales del siglo XIX, el concurso internacional para el proyecto se anunci\u00f3 en 1914. Se recibieron 53 propuestas, la mayor\u00eda de arquitectos suecos. El primer premio fue para la propuesta de Gunnar Asplund y Sigurd Lewrentz. Asplund naci\u00f3 el 22 de septiembre de 1885 en Estocolmo; Lewerentz unos meses antes, el 29 de julio. El padre de Lewerentz era socio y director de una f\u00e1brica de vidrio. Estudi\u00f3 en Estocolmo para ser t\u00e9cnico en construcci\u00f3n de casas, luego se fue a Berll\u00edn, donde trabaj\u00f3 con el arquitecto Bruno Mohring, viaj\u00f3 por Italia y regres\u00f3 a Suecia en 1910 para estudiar en la Academia de Bellas Artes, donde Asplund fue su compa\u00f1ero. En 1911 se asoci\u00f3 con Torsten Stubelius y abrieron su propia oficina.
